28th February 2012 - Week 1

Well, On our first day we were advised to start a Blog.  A blog?  Seriously?  Who would ever want to read anything I had to say, and more to the point, who would care?  Ha ha,  But I did start a journal, and I am finding that I am keeping a couple of my facebook friends updated as to how my new life is panning out so – Why not make a blog?  At least my lecturers will know I am fairdinkum about doing one.  Saying you are doing it and providing proof are two totally different things, so here we are…  I am going to start by typing straight out of the journal I have written, and then I will try to add to this each day..  Here Goes:

Day 1 – Tuesday, 28 February 2012
Today was my first day of uni.  Pouring rain ALL DAY.  I learned today that I am really overwhelmed with the work load and time I will have spare.  Can I do it all?  2 x internal, 2 x external?  I am going to start by using the Weekly Time Table.  Both Alexandra, my 8 year old, and I have filled it out (ha ha) we have even pencilled in time for each other.

Alahna, my eldest is doing STEPS with me.  The first day we must of looked so funny huddled together under a broken umbrella to get to the car.  So glad no one had a camera that day!

Tip of the day – Stay focused on ONE Subject.  Trying to do it all only scatters your thinking.  Pick a subject and work through to completion for that week and then do the next.

Day 2 - Wednesday, 29 February

Well I am really feeling overwhelmed after my first Maths Tute.  There is so much I need to learn.  Its funny, I have always loved maths.  Its the only subject at school that ever really made sense to me, because every other subject was based on what your teacher thought. Not maths; If you are right and knew the work then you were right.  Its that simple.  But, being lazy I always took the low maths subjects so I didn't have to work.  Hell, most of the time I never even bothered showing up and I still topped the class.  I think my Maths teacher secretly resented that he had to give me As' because the comments were never good.  But that was vege maths, this is very different and I need to do the hours before I understand it.

Note to self - watch the video presentations the day BEFORE they are presented in class so you can have your questions ready.

Day 3 - Thursday, 1 March 2012.

Alexandra's organisational skills (or should I say; lack there of) came to a head today.  For 3 weeks she has had an extra homework folder that she has never brought home.  Not Happy Jan.

So after school we both sat and did homework together and she finished it all off.  Maybe this will become a habit?

Computer studies done and submitted, and I sent it via email.   Fingers crossed I sent it to the correct person AND that I did it properly!
I have my assessment for a position with a company I would dearly love to work for tomorrow.  If I do get the job I hope I can handle it all.

Day 4 - Friday, 2 March 2012

Phew!  Through my first week!  I feel a little more at ease now.  This weekend I plan on concentrating on my Technical Writing and PSU.

The pressure must be making my brain a bit fried though because I phoned my sister to wish her a happy birthday -  Idiot.  The computer said 03/02/2012 and her birthday is the 3rd Feb.  I forgot that I have an american computer so the dates are backwards.

I am starting to give some thoughts to what I would like to do when I am finished.  I love media, business and today Julie reminded me that I also mentioned Marketing.  Week five is when careers advisers will be at the University.  With this mind I want to look up the course descriptions of the courses that I am interested in prior to this, so I know what questions I need to ask.  Master of Management (Marketing) looks like it might be a great place to start.

PS - the Job assessment went well - I think?  Five weeks training in Brisbane right on Exam week doesn't sit well though, so if I am successful, hopefully they will have another training session at a later date.

Day 5 Saturday, 3 March 2012

I have formed a new habit this week.  I have been so tired I have been going to bed at 7.30pm but waking up at about 2 - 3am.  What a GREAT time to study.  The world is sleeping and there is quiet and I can think so much better first thing than I can in the evenings.  So I study till about 6am, make a nice big breakfast of Steak and eggs or veges, then I wake Alexandra, we eat breakfast and get dressed.  Then I make both our lunches (Chicken and salad lunch with fruit for morning tea) and off we go.  In the afternoons we do a little homework together and just have a very light dinner - sometimes Weetbix. Hey, we just have our meals backwards.  According to all the Health Specialists we should all be doing it this way anyway...

Maths Tip - 2 x negative = a positive.  Now where have I heard this before?
Mmm consider this sentence:
You can't not do that = You CAN do that.  Right?  Now I have a great way to remember!!!
Oh and 14/15 for my test. I just have to remember not to have stupid blonde moments during testing next time ha ha.

Today I did my Week 2 assessment for Tech Writing.  I don't have to use this one but I figure if I make a good fist of every piece that I do for this subject it will make my choices for which ones to submit that much easier.  I will post it here after assessment so you can see it.

Day 6 - Sunday, 4 March 2012

I stayed up until after 10pm last night.  Stupid move.  But I woke at 5am so I still had enough sleep.  I had a break from study to get my diary organised.

I have been trying to check with lecturers about my schedule and what was expected, and when.  I kept being told not to stress...  Ha ha, that was making me stressed.

I like to know what is expected and more importantly - WHEN.  I can't prepare myself otherwise...  I think I have it down now.  I checked the Schedule, and during PSU last week they showed us an additional section that told us how we were going to be graded.  It took a few hours but I have it all written in my diary - colour coded on the DAY and written in short form in the front under the "Assessment Planner".  Now all I have to do is take my diary into each lecturer and make SURE I have read the schedule correctly.  Wouldn't that be a Pain in the BUTT!  All that work and then be completely WRONG!!  I am hoping that seeing it written they will understand that I am not stressed, just trying to be organised.  I need to know that I am reading what is written in the schedule correctly.

On the first day I mentioned that Alexandra and I had done up a weekly time table together.  Mine is still in pencil (apart from my Uni Times - they are highlighted) as I am still feeling my way, but I thought I would put it here.  It will change, and there are still blank spots (hey I need to sleep at some stage ha ha) but as I get the feel for what I am capable of, I will tweak the timetable accordingly.  (Alexandra has hers colour coded using crayons for school and music practice but I won't show you hers here - just know, that its WAY Cooler than mine!)

Oh you are going to love this one.  Remember yesterday when I said I had done my TECH Writing?  Well, after doing all the checks on the Schedule this morning, I see that it was supposed to be only 200 words but I wrote over 1500.  Back to the drawing board for that piece.
